In preparation for the opening of Phase 1 of the Sonoran Desert Parkway, Maricopa City officials have implemented temporary traffic restrictions on the John Wayne Parkway to improve safety and traffic flow on the busy thoroughfare. announced the change.
Construction is expected to begin on Monday, May 8, 2023 and last through late summer/early fall. During this temporary construction period, the existing traffic lights at the intersection will be removed and drivers should be aware of upcoming traffic regulation changes on the Actin Parkway.
• The City will maintain access to Ak-Chin Parkway from SR-347 facing south.
• Motorists may turn right onto southbound SR-347 from Ak-Chin Parkway during construction.
• Drivers may not turn left onto SR-347 northbound from Ak-Chin Parkway.
• Drivers may not turn left onto Ak-Chin Parkway from northbound SR-347.
During construction, motorists attempting to turn left into or out of the Ak-Chin Parkway will be directed to Farrell Road, which has full access signals to ensure safe travel. This will allow the city to maintain the highest level of access during construction while protecting public safety.
City officials are urging drivers to be vigilant and careful when driving through construction areas along the John Wayne Parkway. Additional traffic enforcement measures will be implemented, including increased police presence, and violations in construction zones can result in double fines. The City encourages residents to stay abreast of traffic regulation changes and other updates by following the City of Maricopa’s social media accounts and visiting the City’s website.
Fully funded by the city, this $30 million project will improve access, safety and portability for travelers. This section of the Parkway is a major component of the Pinal County Regional Transportation Plan and we look forward to the timely completion of this corridor.
