Trump Administration Celebrates Record-Breaking Border Security
The Trump administration announced on Friday a streak of record-breaking events along the US-Mexico border. In July, Border Patrol agents reported zero immigrants being released into the US for the third consecutive month. This is a significant contrast to the Biden-era border crisis, which often saw tens of thousands of illegal crossings each month.
“History has been made again,” complained Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem in a statement. “The numbers don’t lie. This is the safest border ever.” She emphasized that under President Trump, the perceived crisis wasn’t just managed—it was effectively eliminated. “We’ve put the cartel on the defense and reclaimed the border,” she asserted.
According to preliminary records from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), July saw a dramatic decrease in encounters at the border. This month, there were only 4,598 concerns raised—almost 500 less than the average daily rate set during the Biden administration, which reported around 5,110 arrests daily from February 2021 to December 2024.
DHS reported 24,630 encounters in total for July, a slight decrease of 2.4% from the previous month. This figure also reflects a nearly 90% drop in monthly averages compared to the time under Biden, contrasting significantly with the previous month’s total of 6,177 encounters.
“The statistics don’t lie. Border security is national security, and we will continue to enforce our national laws,” stated Border Patrol chief Michael Banks, who also highlighted drug busts made during July on social media.
The drastic reduction in encounters has effectively removed the “catch and release” policy that often led to overcrowded detention facilities. In recent months, Border Patrol agents reported not releasing any illegal immigrants in both May and June, maintaining that success into July.
To put this into perspective, Customs and Border Protection noted that approximately 62,000 immigrants were released along the southern border in May 2024 alone, with another 27,766 released in June that same year under the Biden administration.
The Trump administration previously referred to these achievements as “the fastest improvement in American border security in history.” As the situation continues to evolve, it’s unclear how future data will shape the ongoing discussions around border security.
