Government Shutdown Sparks Political Blame Game
A division of the federal government, operating under the Trump administration, issued a closure notification on its website, shifting blame onto Democrats after a government shutdown occurred early Wednesday morning.
This notification was posted following Congress’s failure to pass a funding bill before the midnight deadline, which resulted in the shutdown starting at 12:01 am on October 1st. A Senate vote of 55-45 fell short of the necessary 60 votes on the Stop Gup bill, which the House had approved late Tuesday.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) displayed a prominent notice stating, “Extremists left behind in Congress have shut down the government. HUD will use available resources to help Americans in need.”
Similarly, the Department of Justice released a statement indicating, “Democrats have shut down the government. The Department of Justice website is currently not updated regularly. Please refer to the Department of Justice Emergency Plan for more information.”
Amidst the chaos, small business managers were reportedly sharing templates for automated responses, encouraging employees to publicly criticize Democrats for the closure. One manager stated, “Senate Democrats are in office for the near future as they voted to block the Clean Federal Funds Bill (HR 5371), leading to government shutdowns that prevent the US Small Business Management (SBA) from serving 330 million small businesses.”
President Trump had met with Congressional leaders from both parties on Monday to address the looming shutdown, but those discussions ultimately did not yield any agreement.
The White House was contacted for comments and initially returned an automated response, noting that the Democratic closure might result in delays in their usual around-the-clock monitoring. A later statement from a White House spokesman asserted, “It’s an objective fact that Democrats are responsible for shutting down the government, and the Trump administration simply shares the truth with the American people.”
