Voice of America Job Cuts Announced
The Trump administration has decided to cut 532 positions at Voice of America (VOA) and its parent agency, according to a recent announcement from the agency’s CEO.
This decision comes on the heels of a ruling by U.S. District Judge Lois Lamberth, which blocked the firing of VOA director Michael Abramowitz. The judge stated that such a dismissal would be illegal without the endorsement from a majority of the International Broadcasting Advisory Committee.
“This is in line with the president’s direction to streamline federal bureaucracy, enhance agency services, and save taxpayer dollars,” the CEO stated.
Judge Lamberth has given the administration until September 15 to comply with an order to restore operations at VOA, which he described as a crucial opportunity to address issues stemming from a recent trial.
On Friday night, Kari Lake, a Trump administration appointee working on the reorganization of VOA, issued layoff notices to over 500 employees, as reported.
“We anticipate taking further actions in the upcoming months to improve the functionality of our troubled agency and ensure that American voices reach international audiences where they matter most,” Lake added.
Staff members who are challenging the cuts have criticized the administration’s actions. “We believe this is a continuation of their appalling strategy,” they stated. “We’re eager to testify and determine if the decision to dismantle VOA followed the strict oversight required by Congress.”
Founded during World War II, VOA provides news to 427 million individuals in areas with limited press freedoms. Employees affected by the layoffs have 30 days until their salaries and benefits are terminated.
