Trump Urges Teams to Revert Names
On Sunday, former President Donald Trump called for the Washington Commanders and the Cleveland Guardians to revert to their previous names, the Redskins and the Indians. He claimed there was support from the Native American community for this change.
In a statement regarding the Truth Society, Trump noted, “The name Washington ‘anything’ should quickly be changed back to the Washington Redskins football team. There’s a significant demand for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians are one of the original baseball franchises, recognized for their rich heritage.” His comments seemed to reflect a blend of nostalgia and a belief in common sense.
Destruction: President Trump calls on Washington Commanders to return their names to the Washington Redskins.
“Washington ‘All-All’ should soon return their names to the Washington Redskins football team.”
The same can be said for the Cleveland Indians.
The Washington NFL team changed its name from the Redskins to the Washington Football Team before adopting the Commanders name in 2020. In a 2016 survey by the Washington Post, 90% of 504 self-identified Native American adults across the U.S. reported they were not offended by the term Redskins.
This name change was influenced by public and corporate pressures to remove what many consider offensive terms. Both teams have since embraced their current identities.
Commander owner Josh Harris mentioned earlier in 2025 that the organization supports the Commanders name, asserting it was well-accepted by the team and its fans. According to a recent survey, support for the Commanders name has risen, with 50% of residents expressing a favorable view compared to just 34% last year. Among local sports enthusiasts, 61% identified positively with the name, a notable increase from 45% the previous year.
As of now, neither team has publicly addressed Trump’s remarks.
