Trump Criticizes GOP Senator For Opposing BBB, Considers Primary Challenge

On Saturday, President Donald Trump criticized Republican Senator Tom Tillis from North Carolina in a social media post following his vote for the “Big, Beautiful Bill (BBB).” Trump pointed out that Tillis has been claiming to offer a 68% tax cut, contrasting it with what he described as the largest tax cut in American history. He expressed frustration over Tillis’s support for extending the debt to Democrats before the upcoming elections, saying, “The troublesome people who actually hate our country,” according to what he shared on Truth Social.

Trump went on to make a series of comments about China, emphasizing that it negatively impacted various aspects, including energy costs. He recalled his past victories in North Carolina, highlighting his contributions during the recent floods, and suggested that Tillis, despite being a Republican, was absent and not effectively representing the state. “North Carolina wouldn’t permit one of its senators to turn this into a platform for his own chance at reelection,” he remarked.

In a subsequent post, Trump hinted at backing Tillis’s primary challenger in the next election, mentioning that many individuals are interested in running against him. He mentioned plans to meet with potential candidates from North Carolina, as well as others across the United States.

Tillis was one of only two Republicans to vote “no” on the bill, citing concerns that cuts to Medicaid would adversely affect his constituents in North Carolina. “I did my homework on behalf of North Carolina, but I can’t support this bill in its current form. It would mean losing tens of millions for hospitals and rural areas,” he stated.

He criticized significant changes to Medicaid within the Senate version of the bill, urging a return to what he described as a more sensible approach from the House. Tillis advocated for reforms targeting waste and fraud while implementing work requirements for able-bodied adults.

He expressed belief in the positive aspects of the BBB, such as extending Trump’s tax cuts and increasing child tax credits, while arguing that it could be achieved without harming rural regions or hospitals in North Carolina. Ultimately, Trump concluded his post by commending certain provisions in the BBB and issued a stern warning to Tillis regarding his opposition to the bill.

Trump emphasized his desire for tax reductions on various fronts, including overtime, social security, and the military, underscoring the broader goal of enhancing employment opportunities.
