Trump’s Stance on Trade Deals Amid Thailand-Cambodia Dispute
On Saturday, Donald Trump took to social media to clarify his position regarding trade agreements with Thailand and Cambodia. He indicated that trade deals wouldn’t be pursued with either nation as the ongoing tensions between them remain unresolved.
“I’ve only communicated with the Cambodian Prime Minister about the situation with Thailand. Now, I’m urging the Thai Prime Minister to put an end to this escalating conflict,” Trump stated. He emphasized his focus on trade concerns involving both countries, though not directly engaging in deals at this time.
Trump mentioned, “A temporary call was made to Thailand. Although my talk with Cambodia concluded, I plan to reconnect to address the war suspension and ceasefire, depending on what Thailand has to say. I’m attempting to untangle this complex situation!”
The dispute intensified on Thursday, affecting national borders, as reported by DW News. Both sides have exchanged accusations—Thailand alleges killings of its citizens by Cambodia, while Cambodia claims it was targeted by Thai airstrikes.
So far, this conflict has resulted in at least 14 fatalities, with thousands evacuated, according to reports from the Associated Press.
Following his initial post, Trump conveyed that both nations had agreed to a ceasefire and were eager to resolve the ongoing tensions. “I had a productive call with the Cambodian Prime Minister and brought him up to speed on discussions with Thailand and its proxy leadership. They are both aiming for an immediate ceasefire and peace,” he shared.
He also noted that while both parties are interested in negotiating trade deals, discussions will only commence once the conflict is resolved. “They want to return to the ‘trading table’ with the US, but, I believe, it’s not appropriate to engage in that until hostilities cease. They have met and agreed on a ceasefire, striving for lasting peace!” Trump remarked.
Currently, both Thailand and Cambodia face mutual tariffs set at 36%. As indicated in a White House fact sheet, this has implications for their trading dynamics.
In closing, Trump expressed gratitude for his interactions with both countries, acknowledging their rich history and culture. “It’s been an honor to engage with them. I believe they will build a friendship that lasts for years,” he concluded.
