Trump’s Firing of IRS Commissioner Long
A senior official from the White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump has removed Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Long from his position as of Friday afternoon, which comes just a couple of months after his appointment.
The reasons for Long’s dismissal have not been disclosed by officials who prefer to remain anonymous. Furthermore, it remains unclear when he is expected to officially leave the agency. Trump has requested Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent to step in as the acting director of the IRS. This makes Bescent the sixth individual to lead the IRS during Trump’s second term.
The New York Times covered Long’s firing amidst discussions about his subsequent nomination as the U.S. ambassador to Iceland, which he announced shortly after his removal from the IRS.
Long expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating on his social media that he is looking forward to his new role as the ambassador. He also mentioned his commitment to advancing Trump’s agenda.
Previously, Long served as a congressman for Missouri’s 7th Congressional District for over a decade since 2011 and had sponsored legislation aimed at repealing the IRS.
In June, he was confirmed to lead the IRS with a 53-44 party-line vote in the Senate. Long was known for his tenacity and was well-regarded during his tenure in the House.
The IRS has not provided further comments beyond directing inquiries to the Treasury Department.
