Trump Hints at Major Update on Revamping Washington, D.C.

Trump Hints at Security Plans for Washington, D.C. After Recent Shootings

President Donald Trump has suggested that a significant announcement regarding security measures in Washington, D.C. is on the horizon, especially following a spate of shootings in the area.

The latest incident involved the tragic shooting of Eric Tarpinian Yachim, an intern for Republican Representative Ron Estes from Kansas, which occurred on Monday night. This was confirmed by his office. Responding to inquiries about potential congressional actions to regain control over the city amid these violent outbreaks, Trump shared his intention to address the situation in D.C. with a White House correspondent.

In a related incident from May, two staff members from the Israeli embassy were also killed near the capital’s Jewish Museum—just a month prior to Yachim’s shooting. The Department of Homeland Security has verified their identities and stated that D.C. police are investigating, with efforts underway to gather further information.

Presently, Washington, D.C. is governed by a locally elected mayor and a city council of 13 members, as outlined in the District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973. This legislation allows residents to elect their own local government, although the council retains key authority over city laws and budgets. Critics have noted that proposals aimed at curbing the rising violent crime in the area have not made significant progress.

This latest shooting underscores the ongoing worries about crime rates in Washington, D.C. Data indicates that between 2018 and 2022, only a small percentage—less than 2%—of individuals caught with illegal firearms were given prison terms. In 2024 alone, nearly 2,900 guns were seized across the district, according to the Metropolitan Police.
