Trump Honors Charlie Kirk on 9/11 Anniversary
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has announced plans to honor the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a ceremony on the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people. This observance will take place in the Pentagon Courtyard on September 11, 2025.
Kirk, co-founder and leader of Turning Point USA, was tragically shot earlier this week while speaking on a university campus in Utah.
Trump referred to the incident as a “vicious assassination” and highlighted Kirk’s inspirational role for many within his generation. He mentioned that Kirk was a guiding force for “the champions of freedom and millions of people.”
“We miss him dearly. The courage he instilled in countless individuals, especially the youth, will certainly continue to resonate,” Trump remarked.
He also mentioned that while the ceremony honoring Kirk is expected to draw a large crowd, the timing for presenting the highest civilian honor is still being finalized.
Reflecting on the tragic events of 9/11, Trump expressed concern for the loved ones of the nearly 3,000 victims, stating, “The entire world felt the impact of this tragedy.” He acknowledged the lasting weight the attacks have imposed on families, lamenting that “birthdays go uncelebrated and dreams remain unfinished.”
The president’s remarks came after Defense Secretary Pete Hegses praised Kirk as a “good and loyal servant,” and he echoed sentiments of hope amidst the somber memories of 9/11.
“The young soldiers, police officers, firefighters, and border agents give me hope for our future,” Hegges stated.
Vice President Vance in Utah
Vice President JD Vance, who initially planned to attend the 9/11 observance in New York City, changed his itinerary to meet with Kirk’s family in Utah. He later traveled to Arizona on Air Force Two with Kirk’s remains.
Trump, however, maintained his scheduled appearance at a New York Yankees game to commemorate the 9/11 anniversary.
Following the announcement, Vance shared a heartfelt statement on social media, reflecting on his friendship with Kirk, noting that Kirk had initially been skeptical of Trump in 2016 before aligning with his political agenda.
“Many achievements of our administration can be traced back to Charlie’s ability to organize and unite,” Vance expressed.
Kirk’s advocacy organization played a significant role in mobilizing young voters during Trump’s 2024 campaign. Wednesday’s event was meant to kick off Kirk’s multi-stop “American Comeback Tour” but was tragically interrupted by his death, which occurred shortly before a scheduled event at Colorado State University.
Concerns Over Political Violence
Kirk’s death adds to a troubling trend of politically motivated violence witnessed in recent years. Earlier this summer, a suspect shot and fatally wounded former Minnesota Senator Melissa Hortman, along with another state senator and their spouses. Additionally, threats against political figures have risen, including attempts on Trump’s life.
Notably, the event at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, marked a significant moment of political instability, resulting in several deaths and numerous injuries to law enforcement officers.
