Trump Critiques Mayoral Candidate Mamdani’s Policies
New York Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani secured a victory in the primary, prompting a sharp response from former President Donald Trump during an interview on Fox News Sunday. Trump expressed his concerns about the implications of Mamdani’s potential leadership.
In the New York City Democratic primary held on Tuesday, Mamdani’s progress raised analysts’ eyebrows, suggesting that his success might impact future elections. Trump, speaking on “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo,” voiced strong opposition, indicating that he would take measures to ensure the city faces repercussions if it adopts what he considers extreme policies.
“He’s a communist. I think it’s very bad for New York,” Trump stated, asserting Mamdani’s ideological leanings. He mentioned that if Mamdani becomes mayor, he would have to follow the right policies or risk losing funding. “He has to do the right thing,” Trump added.
Trump admitted feeling distrustful towards Mamdani’s rise, reflecting on a past belief that the U.S. would never elect socialists. “It’s shocking that I was assuming that,” he said, noting what he sees as a shift towards more extreme political views in the country.
Later in the conversation, Bartiromo raised the issue of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu potentially being arrested if he visited New York, to which Trump responded, “Yeah, he’s a radical left madman.” Mamdani has publicly pledged to arrest Netanyahu, claiming it would align New York’s actions with international law, even though the U.S. isn’t a member of the International Criminal Court.
Moreover, Mamdani has criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), labeling it an “illegal agency.” He pointed to incidents involving immigrants and questioned the agency’s actions. His campaign is rooted in progressive ideals, supporting taxpayer-funded programs like free buses, childcare, and community-owned grocery stores.
However, his proposal to reduce police presence alongside his controversial views on Israel has led to widespread criticism from various quarters.
