Former President Donald Trump, who was recently convicted in a New York court, maintains a large lead in Alabama, according to a new poll conducted by the Alabama Republican Party. The poll shows Trump with 59.7% of the vote to Biden's 33.5%, with 6.8% of respondents remaining undecided.
The poll was conducted by the Alabama Republican Party and polled 1,643 randomly stratified general election voters across Alabama. The survey was conducted by telephone between June 1 and June 3 and has a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percentage points.
When the results are broken down by party affiliation, Trump is leading among both Republicans and independents, and a new poll shows that 93.8% of Republicans support Trump, surpassing Joe Biden's 88.5% support among Democrats, and he also has a high approval rating within his party.
The poll also surveyed Alabama voters about the recent New York court ruling against Donald Trump. A majority (64.5%) of voters say the charges against Trump are politically motivated, including more than a third of African-American voters and 63.4% of Hispanic voters. This is significantly higher than the 20.7% of Democratic voters who feel the same way.
When voters were asked whether the ruling made them more or less likely to vote for Trump, the trend in support continued, with 64.3% of respondents saying the ruling made them more likely to support Trump. While the question split sharply along party lines, the results showed that Democrats were more likely to break from their party's overall position, with 20.1% of Democrats saying they would be more likely to vote for Trump, compared to just 8.4% of Republicans saying they would be less likely.

The divide within the Democratic Party appears to be based on minority voter concerns that Trump's charges are politically motivated: 36.3% of African-American voters and 66.7% of Hispanic voters said a conviction made them more likely to vote for Donald Trump, a shift that the Alabama Republican Party noted is particularly noteworthy, as these groups are traditionally seen as leaning more Democratic.
Overall, Trump's conviction appeared to have little impact on respondents' voting plans in the upcoming general election, with 90.7% saying their intentions to vote remained unchanged. Among those who changed their mind, Democrats were more than twice as likely to reconsider their candidate, with 13.0% of Democrats saying the court's decision had changed their vote compared to just 5.2% of Republicans.
“This poll results make it clear that Alabamians see the political motivations behind the allegations against Donald Trump,” said Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wall.
“Republicans are firm believers in the rule of law and that everyone must be held accountable. However, a key part of the law is that every individual has the right to a fair trial. Donald Trump did not receive a fair trial in New York last week, but he has a chance to get justice at the polls in November. The justice system should never be used as a political weapon and the Biden administration should be held accountable by voters.”

“Alabamians remain steadfast in supporting President Trump and his America First policies because they make sense. From inflation to border security, the Biden Administration's failures are clear, but instead of talking about the issues facing the American people, they're using the justice system to attack their political opponents. It's time to get back to the issues and work toward solutions that help our country, and that's what Republicans are trying to do,” Wall said.
