The Pentagon removed Colonel Susanna Myers from command of US military Greenland base on Thursday after criticising Vice President J.D. Vance’s comments during a recent visit to the Arctic Circle.
Myers sent an internal email to Pituffik Space Base officials who are effectively rebuking Vance’s criticism of Denmark, the territory of Greenland, winning the Trump administration’s Arctic agenda, Military.com. It has been reported. The message was sent several days after Vance’s March 28 visit, which claimed that the Vice President’s remarks were not representative of the base or its mission. “I don’t think I’ll understand politics at the moment,” Myers wrote. “But I know that the concerns of the US administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of the Pituffik space base. I promise that, as long as I can lead this base, all our flags will be proudly flying together.”
Actions to undermine the chain of orders or overturn President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated by the Department of Defense.

A Pentagon statement shared on X via Space Force spokesman Sean Parnell made that reasoning unsecreted, saying “an attempt to overturn President Trump’s agenda is unacceptable.” Official justification cited “loss of confidence” [Meyers’] Ability to lead, standard phrases normally reserved for a grave command violation.
“Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as they are related to remaining independent in the performance of their duties,” the statement reads.
During the visit, Vance accused Denmark of “lack of investment” in its “incredibly beautiful land” security infrastructure, saying the Danish government “had not done a good job by the people of Greenland.” The statement came as part of the broader Trump administration’s efforts to assert America’s strategic domination in the Arctic and revitalize interest in acquiring resource-rich islands, which have become more geopolitically important due to the melting of sea ice and expanding transport lanes.

Myers, who was reportedly appointed last July under former President Joe Biden, was trying to highlight cohesion across the multinational community at the U.S. base, including officials in the United States, Denmark, Canada and Greenland. The removal underscores the broader changes in civil-military relations under Trump’s second term, where loyalty to management policies is increasingly being treated as non-negotiable.
