Trump Said to Send Offensive Weapons to Ukraine in Significant Shift

Trump to Announce New Ukraine Support Plan

President Donald Trump is expected to unveil a new initiative on Monday aimed at bolstering support for Ukraine, which may include offensive weapons, according to sources who spoke to Axios.

This shift signifies a notable change in the Ukrainian government’s policy, especially after Trump’s initial approval was momentarily halted. This was followed by his commitment to send Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine. Frustration has surfaced publicly from Trump, as he and Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized their leaders for stalling negotiations while continuing military actions.

During a scheduled meeting with NATO Secretary Mark Latte on Monday morning, Trump is anticipated to detail his support plans. Reports suggest that the provision might encompass long-range missiles capable of striking deep into Moscow, though final decisions are still unclear.

“Putin really surprised a lot of people,” Trump remarked to reporters on Sunday. “He tells me a good story but then bombs everyone in the evening, so there’s a bit of a problem there. I don’t like it.”

Since the onset of conflict between 2022 and March 2025, Ukraine has received $66.9 billion in U.S. military aid, as confirmed by the State Department.

Patriot battery shipments hit a pause on July 2 as U.S. weapon reserves were reviewed. This dip in U.S. military stockpiles has raised alarms among foreign policy and defense experts. Nevertheless, Trump announced on July 7 that the missile shipments would resume, albeit with a reduced number of Patriot batteries than originally planned, carrying a NATO price tag. Reportedly, Trump hesitated about sending the Patriot systems to Ukraine, expressing to a friend, “This is not my war.”

Amidst the ongoing conflict, Russia and Ukraine have been trading drone and missile strikes, but the frontline has remained relatively stable. Just before Trump’s expected announcement, Russia launched 136 drones at Ukraine; Kyiv managed to neutralize 108 of them, while the remaining drones impacted ten different locations.

The White House has not yet commented on this matter.
