Security Funding Request After Assassination
The Trump administration is set to request $58 million from Congress aimed at bolstering security for enforcement and judicial branches. This follows the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10 at Utah Valley University.
The proposed funding includes resources for former U.S. services and enhanced protective measures for the Supreme Court and the White House, according to officials. There’s also support for increased Congressional security funding, though specific details will be provided later, as reported by CBS News.
“We need to ensure the safety of those running for office, or we risk losing them,” House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed to reporters on Thursday. He noted that a comprehensive review of current security protocols is in progress.
The Senate is also looking into similar safety measures amid rising threats against lawmakers. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan indicated that his department expects to register over 14,000 threats to legislators this year—an alarming increase compared to previous years.
“We’re committed to keeping our members of Congress secure,” Sullivan stated, confirming that the U.S. Capitol Police will adopt an “enhanced stance” moving forward.
The assassination of Kirk during a campus speaking event has sparked heightened fears regarding political violence directed at public figures. The 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was shot shortly after delivering his speech, sending attendees into a panic and prompting a reevaluation of national security for political events.
