Tuberville: Biden’s politicization of the VA is ‘an absolute disgrace’

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Auburn, has accused President Joe Biden of using military veterans to push his administration's progressive policies.

Earlier this year, Tuberville VA Abortion Transparency Act Imposes new abortion reporting requirements on the VA to increase transparency for taxpayers.

“Congress has made its decision,” Tuberville said in a statement. “The 1992 Veterans Health Care Act clearly prohibits the VA from providing any type of abortion services. It is shameful that the Biden Administration is twisting the law in a way that is different from Congress's intent and passing the costs onto taxpayers. Veterans deserve a VA that is 100% focused on ensuring they have access to timely, quality care, not implementing Joe Biden's mandated abortion policies. I am proud to introduce this bill that will provide much-needed transparency to taxpayers and hold the VA accountable.”

The senator, who sits on the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, introduced the bill after the VA announced that in 2022 it will begin providing support for abortions for veterans and their dependents through the taxpayer-funded VA health care system.

Tuberville again criticized the policy on Tuesday. Editorial For National Review.

“VA is one of the few agencies in the federal government that has remained largely removed from political frays. Even in times of political turmoil, the U.S. has maintained its tradition of prioritizing care for the men and women who have sacrificed for our country,” Tuberville wrote. “Unfortunately, under President Biden, the VA has lost sight of its core mission. Many veterans who experience long wait times to receive care through the VA now find themselves struggling with an administration that prioritizes progressive policies over their benefits.”

Taborville said the Biden administration is pushing this new abortion policy in violation of the law.

“Two years ago, President Biden's VA announced that it would begin supporting taxpayer-funded abortions through VA medical centers and community care providers, something that was expressly prohibited by 1992 law,” Taborville argued. “Members of Congress have submitted numerous lab reports seeking data on the implementation of the new policy, but VA has refused to answer even basic questions like how many abortions are supported through VA, how the abortions are performed, at what stage of pregnancy the abortions are being performed, or even how much this new policy is costing the American people.”

He also accused Biden of prioritizing partisan politics over the welfare of American veterans.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first time the VA has prioritized Joe Biden's conscious policies over providing timely, quality health care to veterans… This is a complete disgrace and an insult to veterans who deserve the best health care our country can provide,” he said. “Sadly, this decision by the VA is just one of many under President Biden where veterans have not been made a top priority.”
