Tuscaloosa Academy Alumnus Earns National Recognition
Tuscaloosa Academy graduate Russell Cole has been honored as a member of the 2025 National Football Foundation (NFF) distinction team. This accolade acknowledges academic athletes from outstanding high schools across the country for their achievements in sports, academics, and community involvement.
Cole was chosen as the only representative from Alabama, making the cut among 82 players selected nationwide from a large pool of over 3,500 academic athletes nominated by the NFF’s chapter network. Each chapter can nominate just one individual, and Cole stood out as the top academic athlete in the University of Alabama chapter.
“Every year, the NFF distinction team showcases the best of high school soccer: these young men exemplify character, showcase excellence, and contribute positively to their communities,” remarked a representative.
The 2025 distinction team features honorees from 40 states, boasting an impressive average GPA of 4.15. Among them, 74 were team captains, 54 were National Honor Society members, and 10 were recognized as class defense attorneys.
During his time at Tuscaloosa Academy, Cole excelled both academically and in extracurricular activities. He graduated with a 4.14 GPA and was part of various honor societies, such as the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the Spanish Honor Society, and the Computer Science Honor Society. He also joined the school’s 30+ ACT club and was honored as “Mr. Tuscaloosa Academy” for his leadership and character traits.
Cole effectively manages his athletic commitments alongside his academic achievements. A standout multisport athlete, he played varsity football and baseball, serving as captain for both teams. He was also active in groups like Christian Athlete, Young Life, TA Ambassador, and Key Club, and held the treasurer position in the Student Government Association.
Reflecting on his time at Tuscaloosa Academy, Cole fondly remembers the playoff victory against Salicent that led to their state championship win.
Looking ahead, Cole aims to further his studies at the University of Alabama, where he has been accepted into the University Honors College as a presidential scholar. He intends to major in accounting and finance.
The National Football Foundation has promoted amateur football and recognized outstanding academic athletes since 1954, describing this year’s awardees as “shining examples of character and excellence.”
