Community members at the University of California, Santa Cruz will soon be able to take advantage of the new countywide bike share system. From June this year, he will be able to rent an e-Bike. Regional e-bike sharing program. The program is in partnership with UCSC, Santa Cruz County, Cabrillo College, City of Santa Cruz, City of Capitola, and City of Watsonville.
“UCSC is delighted to partner with neighboring countries on this exciting initiative,” said Dan Henderson, Executive Director of Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS). “Bike-sharing is a great commuting choice for not only university personnel, but everyone in the community. We hope that our students, employees, and guests will consider this low-cost, convenient alternative to single-person vehicles when traveling around campus and the community.”
“City and regional partners are excited to introduce an improved bike share system with expanded coverage and a vital docking system to the Santa Cruz jurisdiction free of charge,” said Claire Gallogly, Santa Cruz Municipal Transportation Planner.
This bike-sharing system reflects participants’ efforts to reduce single-person vehicle trips, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve multimodal transportation, and increase the number of trips with sustainable transportation.
Initially, approximately 400 BCycle e-Bikes and 800 docks will be available throughout Santa Cruz and UCSC. Over 25 docks will be located throughout the residential campus, Westside Research Park, and Coastal Science Campus. By 2024, bike shares are expected to expand to Capitola, Cabrillo University and Watsonville. BCycle and its parent company Trek cover all capital costs.
“If you live outside of campus biking distance and work or attend classes at UCSC, you can use our shared bikes to get around and between campuses,” explains TAPS Associate Director Jonathan Weidman. “I can commute from the city of Santa Cruz with this.”
The BCycle app allows riders to access and unlock their bikes. The app and his website on his BCycle show the location of the bike and the charge level of the battery. E-bikes must be picked up and dropped off at one of his BCycle docks dedicated to him.
Walk-up, monthly and annual rental rates will be available.
