A majority of Americans support President Joe Biden's decision to not run for reelection due to concerns about his mental health, according to a recent New York Times/Siena poll.
The poll, conducted among 1,142 registered voters from July 22 to 24, found that about 87% of voters approved of the president's decision, while only 9% disapproved. according to To the NYT. Adam Schiff and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, urged him to step aside.
The survey found that 77% of voters were “satisfied” or “enthusiastic” about the announcement, while 56% expressed dissatisfaction with Biden's overall handling of his presidency. Nearly half of respondents said they voted for Biden in 2020.
A poll released shortly after a June debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump showed that 72% of voters believe the president is not mentally sound enough to serve another term, and a July poll before he announced his candidacy showed just over half of Americans said he should drop out of the race.

In his withdrawal, Biden announced that he was endorsing his running mate, Kamala Harris, to run in his place, despite her receiving very few votes in the Democratic primary. A poll conducted after Sunday's announcement found that a majority of respondents believed the Democratic frontrunner had helped hide Biden's decline from the public. Biden's approval rating has remained low throughout his presidency and has remained steady below 40% in recent months. The president was trailing Trump in many polls before deciding to drop out of the race, with pollster Nate Silver's July model projecting Trump at 42.7% nationally to Biden's 39.7%.
Despite the polls, Biden insisted after the debate that he wouldn't end his campaign until the week of his reelection announcement.
