Victor Davis Hanson said on Newsmax on Wednesday that President Donald Trump has created a “all-new Middle East.”
When he appeared in “Finnerty,” Hanson said Trump had broken a long-standing myth about Iran’s perceptual invincibility.
“They look at Hezbollah, these stop the geese, stomp, you know, Titan, and [the] Same as Hamas. Their entire fantasy has broken up. It was a whole new Middle East, all created by Donald Trump and had a connection with Vivi,” Hanson said.
For decades, Hanson said that the Middle East has been defined by a series of challenging assumptions that Iran is out of control, and that Hezbollah is a formidable force, and that the US had to accept countless provocations without retaliation.

“We lived for 50 years in the myth that you never talk about Iran. They are indomitable. You can’t reply to the Americans who were killed in the barracks in 1983. When you blow up the embassy, it’s just like that. “Donald Trump took out the entire enrichment site in 35 minutes and lost no one. He had to ask for permission from the Israelis. The only hurdle they had was to allow the Israelis to enter the Iranian space and ask what they couldn’t do.”
Hanson said Trump’s actions have significantly damaged groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas. (Related: Trump appears to have world leaders rewrite the rulesbook on defense spending)
“They’re failing, and this one guy comes out and as you point out, he doesn’t want to go to the beach house and sit on the beach and relax and people praise him. “I’m 23 now. I think I need to go up to 5%.”
NATO members agreed to raise defensive spending from 2% to 5% of GDP by 2035, following sustained Trump pressure, resulting in a major victory for the alliance. Trump praised his commitment as a major victory for the US, Europe and Western civilizations in opposition to past criticism that his harsh attitude would weaken NATO.
Trump has consistently criticised NATO members for failing to meet his 2% GDP defense spending commitment, but the US has owed an unbalanced share of the defense burden. In 2024, countries such as Croatia, Portugal, Italy, Canada, Belgium, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Spain were unable to meet the 2% threshold. According to To the Atlantic Council.
