According to NBC News, 27-year-old construction worker Jorge de la Torre died after falling to the ground with the crane.
According to the media, three people on the bridge and in cars were injured, including Jemarin Castillo, who was a backseat passenger in the car that was hit.
Castillo's lawyers, who are suing for more than $50 million in negligence, argued that she lost consciousness when the crane struck her car, but was able to regain consciousness and escape, NBC News reported.
According to NBC News, Castillo said he suffered “severe head and facial trauma” in the accident.
The driver of the car was able to walk away uninjured from the accident. ABC7 report.
In the body camera footage, an officer can be heard asking one of the drivers, “Ma'am, what hurts?” to which the driver responds, “It doesn't hurt at all.”
“When something like this happens as a community, we have to figure out what we need to do to make sure it never happens again,” Castillo's attorney, Judd Rosen, told NBC News. “So far, we haven't heard anything about criminal charges and where is the responsibility?”
Fort Lauderdale Police have completed their investigation into the accident and determined it was accidental and not criminal.
