A 19-year-old man from Ocala, Florida, has been charged with child abuse and kidnapping after putting a minor in his car on July 13 and starting a police high-speed chase.
According to the arrest report, the incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. when a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a significantly newly damaged vehicle driving on the wrong side of Jacksonville Road.

The driver, identified as Jeremiah Lewis, reportedly made a quick U-turn and accelerated away from the scene as soon as he confronted police. WCJB. The maneuver caused a high-speed chase, which was quickly called off due to alleged reckless driving by Lewis, the paper said. Later, another sheriff saw Lewis driving dangerously near Northeast 25th Street and resumed pursuit. Authorities said during the chase, Lewis reached speeds in excess of 90 mph, drove against his vehicle, and eventually crashed into a lamppost and a stop sign.
Investigators saw the rear door of Lewis’ car open several times during the chase, according to WCJB. Police were able to bring the vehicle to a safe stop after a tactical pit maneuver, the newspaper reported.
WCJB said Lewis tried to flee on foot but was quickly arrested.
Authorities found a group of six juvenile passengers inside the vehicle. One is 12, four are 14 and one is 16, the newspaper said. According to WCJB, the children told officers that they tried to escape several times during the chase, but Lewis had forcibly stopped them.
According to WCJB, Lewis has been charged with six counts of kidnapping, six counts of child abuse, four counts of obstruction of custody of a minor, two counts of running away, leaving the scene of a crash, hit-and-run, and resisting a police officer.
