Maricopa County, Arizona (AZFamily) — The housing crisis and homelessness are a big concern for many families in the Valley, and now you have a chance to get involved.
On Tuesday, January 28th, volunteers will gather across Maricopa County to assess the annual point-in-time homeless count.
Brian Guenther, regional homelessness program manager for the Maricopa Association of Governments, said the goal is to spread out across the county and count the number of people experiencing homelessness on any given night. You can also ask a few simple questions, such as where the person spent last night, he says.
Gunther said the numbers are important because they help show whether progress has been made on housing issues, and it’s just one piece of data that shows whether a community is moving in the right direction.
Counties are also required to receive federal funding to address homelessness.
In 2024, just over 9,400 people were experiencing homelessness. This represents a 17% decrease in people living without shelter and a 13% increase in people staying in shelters compared to the previous year.
