Watchdog report finds persistent issues inside federally run jails in Arizona Indian County

A government watchdog advisory released at the end of April found ongoing security problems at federally run detention centers on tribal lands.

of Recommendation I’m from the Inspector General’s Office at the Home Office.

It is the parent agency of the Indian Service, which operates and maintains federal adult and juvenile detention centers on tribal lands.

Oversight agencies say they found significant health and safety issues at the San Carlos Apache Adult/Juvenile Detention Center, the Tohono Oddam Adult Detention Center, and the White Mountain Apache Adult Detention Center in 2015. The fall of 2022 shows that the condition of facilities is not improving and in some cases worsening.

It cites conditions such as leaky pipes and non-functioning toilets.

Rep. Raul Grijalva said the report highlights how persistent funding shortfalls are affecting the Bureau of Indian Affairs, undermining trust between the federal government and Indian countries. He said he pointed to persistent problems.
