Wife dies, husband rescued after Jeep swept away in Navajo County

HOLBROOK, Arizona — A woman died when the car she and her husband were in was washed away by floodwaters. Navajo County Sheriff’s Office Said.

Authorities received a call just before 11 a.m. Thursday from a husband rescued by a local resident, reporting that his 64-year-old wife had gone missing.

The couple were jeeping on Hatch Road, about 16 miles west of Route 377, crossing a channel known as “Seymour’s Crossing” Wednesday night.

“The rapidly moving water washed the jeep off the dirt road and began pushing the vehicle downstream,” her husband told officials.

An hour later, the pair crawled out of the vehicle and reached the riverbank, according to the sheriff’s office. The couple were then separated in the dark.

My husband was found the next morning and was able to call for help. His wife was later found dead about half a mile downstream from the jeep and about 200 feet above the water, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigation is ongoing.
