Wild Video Shows Pilot’s Canopy Suddenly Open, Shatter Mid Flight

A Dutch pilot released a video on Saturday showing the canopy of a small plane suddenly bursting into pieces during flight.

Nalin Melkumjian shared the footage on X on Saturday, saying the incident happened during an aerobic training flight on a hot summer's day a few years ago.

“The canopy of the Xtra 330LX I was piloting opened and shattered in flight,” she wrote in the post. “As you can see from the video, it was a difficult experience that could have been avoided with a proper visual check before takeoff.”

Melkmudjian explained that the locking pins on the protective barrier had not been properly locked and that this “went unnoticed” during an inspection of the aircraft before takeoff.

“The flight was a painful experience, filled with noise, difficulty breathing and poor visibility,” she wrote. “It took nearly 28 hours for my vision to fully recover.”

In the more than four-minute video shared on X, Merkmudjian can be seen first preparing to take off, with the flight appearing normal until about two minutes into the video.

As Mel-Khumjian appears to circle, the canopy above her opens up, shattering into pieces in the process. Mel-Khumjian can be seen keeping her head slightly down as she continues to steer the aircraft. She can be seen trying to keep her eyes open as she encounters high winds.

She can be seen landing safely at the end of the video.

Melkmudjian wrote that her coach spoke to her on the radio throughout the incident, telling her to “just keep flying.”

She noted that flying without eye protection “made an already difficult flight even more difficult.” (Related article: Two killed after plane crashes into mobile home park, officials say)

Melkmudjian hopes her fellow pilots can learn from her mistakes.

“It's not easy to show your weaknesses to everyone. But I [realize] How important it is to be transparent about our shortcomings and the lessons we learned along the way,” she wrote.

“I hope that if there are any pilots watching this, my story will serve as a lesson and you will learn from my mistake,” she added. “To my fellow pilots, please stay safe.”
