Williams Fire in Cochise County prompts road closures and evacuations

Cochise County, Arizona (KGUN) — The Williams fire now spans 500 acres.

Two main buildings and a few smaller ones were destroyed.

The Aravaipa and Mesa Interagency Hotshot crews, two inmate crews, and 13 engines have caught fire and are making good progress despite the windy conditions.

All evacuation orders were lifted around 20:15.

Fire officials have warned residents to keep their windows closed as air quality remains affected. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and remains unknown.

Frye Fire District Deputy Chief Caleb Mawsey said, “We’ve lost a few structures. I think one house is probably some outdoor building and maybe two houses.

No injuries have been reported.

Update: 6:15 PM

The Williams Fire spread over more than 150 acres in Cochise County, and the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office evacuated Copper Glance Road and Palominas Road, east and south of Hereford Road, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

Road closures include:

  • Route 92
  • Palominas Road
  • Hereford Road

The red flag warning is in effect until 8pm Monday night with winds of 45 mph. Drivers should expect reduced visibility.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office responded to a wildfire on Highway 191 in the Elfrida area around 11:40 am on April 3rd.

Around 1:06 PM, another wildfire was reported at Block 8800 of South Williams Road in Hereford.

At 2:00 pm, evacuations took place in the areas north of Foudy Road, Copper Glance, Waters and south of Hereford Road.

Hereford Road is closed east of Palominas Road and south of Highway 92, and Palominas Road is closed south of Highway 92.

The fire has moved to the northeast of the area.

Confirmation of road closures:

  • Head south on Hereford Road in Copper Glance to Highway 92.
  • Head south on Palominas Road on Hereford Road to Highway 92.
  • Palominas Road in Three Canyons.

This area is completely closed to traffic. Please refrain from using it until further notice.
At 3:10 pm, residents of Red Mountain away from Foudy were advised to evacuate.

Cochise County Animal Control Officers are on site and answering calls for assistance.
