Winslow’s Shaunce’ Yellowhair wins Navajo County Spelling Bee, will rep at state | Navajo-Hopi Observer

WINSLOW, Ariz. — Shaunce Yellowhair won the annual Navajo County Spelling Bee on February 14th. Eighth grade students from Winslow Middle School defeated 40 students from District 11 to win at Snowflake Auditorium.

Second place went to Spencer Whiting, an eighth-grader from Blue Ridge Unified School District, and third place went to Levi Talerico from Heber-Overgaard Unified School District. The runners-up received $50 and $25.

After Whiting misspelled “illustrious,” Yellowhair spelled it correctly, followed by correctly spelling “ammunition” and claimed the title.

Yellow Hair received $100 and the winner's trophy. She will represent Navajo County in the Arizona State Bee on March 16 at the Madison Center for the Arts in Phoenix.

Winslow Middle School officials praised Yellowhair's accomplishments on the school's Facebook page, writing that everyone at the school was proud of her.

“The Navajo County Superintendent's Office would like to thank everyone who supported this year's bees,” Navajo County government said on Facebook. “APS donated water bottles and the Navajo County Board of Supervisors donated T-shirts for the spellers.”
