Azerbaijani and Armenian Leaders Discuss Peace and Nobel Prize Nomination
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reached an agreement during peace discussions on Friday. Interestingly, Aliyev mentioned that he believes President Donald Trump deserves recognition, specifically the Nobel Peace Prize, for his role in facilitating discussions between their countries.
Trump, announcing a significant development, indicated this might mark the end of a three-decade conflict regarding territorial disputes between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Pashinyan, while speaking to reporters during the peace agreement signing, expressed strong support for Trump’s nomination for the prize, suggesting that he actively advocates for it.
Following Pashinyan’s comments, Aliyev proposed that both leaders make a joint appeal to the Nobel Committee, questioning, “If not President Trump, who?” He emphasized the importance of their historic agreement, highlighting how it symbolizes the cooperation of nations that have experienced prolonged conflict.
Aliyev stated, “This is a concrete result of President Trump’s leadership. If he isn’t deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize, then who is?”
The discussions leading to this peace agreement reportedly involved considerable efforts from the United States to encourage collaboration between the two nations, which may also enhance their economic relations with the U.S.
This latest nomination proposal for Trump follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s nomination in July, where he praised Trump’s support during tense negotiations involving Israel and Hamas.
Since assuming office, Trump claims to have addressed various global conflicts, including peace efforts between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Syria, and India and Pakistan.
