Prescott, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) – The countdown to Election Day has begun, and with two weeks to go, Yavapai County has no election officials. Longtime former director Lynn Constabile has resigned, saying she’s fed up with how messed up she’s become.Yavapai County tried to fill the position, but few people applied. It is said that
Michelle Burchill, who was appointed as the new county registrar in June, assumed most of these responsibilities. I was. As Record Keeper, Burchill oversees early voting and maintains voter rolls.
With so few people applying for the open election administrator post, the county decided to put hiring on hold and instead focus on the midterm elections.
When the former registrar and elections officer resigned, both cited threats and mistrust from the community. Burchill tried to address this problem by bringing in people.
This includes cameras installed in rooms where poll workers track return envelopes and verify signatures. Observers can come and see. “This is our central tally area. We ordered additional windows, but they are on backorder,” she explained.
This is a big change for Burchill, who admits he had doubts while working in the elections department in March 2020. “I had this idea that things were done a certain way because of what I saw on the Internet,” Burchill said.
Her perspective quickly changed when she saw how things were done and how thoughtful the process was. “Seeing everyone working so hard, I told myself that this was really a thankless job and that I had to be here for a good reason,” Burchill said.
