Yuma, Ariz. (KAWC) – Local leaders say they have hope for KAWC Tuesday’s visit by six U.S. senators Bringing positive change to our borders.
Senator Kirsten Cinema of Arizona and John Cornyn of Texas brought the senators first to El Paso and then here to Yuma.
In both cities, they spoke with law enforcement, nonprofits, and local leaders, including Yuma Mayor Douglas Nichols.
Nicholls has played a very active role in finding solutions to the border crisis, but has made little progress over the years.
He says he feels optimistic about Tuesday’s conversation with the senator.
“In the nearly ten years I have been in office, we have had six incumbent senators from both parties, or, as Cinema Senator pointed out, from three parties, and have been very open with local leaders. This is the first time I’ve seen a forum discuss immigration, folks at the table.
Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines has long been a vocal critic of Democratic immigration policies. Lines says he sees change.
“It’s nice to hear Democrats say this isn’t sustainable, right? And they know it’s not sustainable. They know their resources are tight and they can’t do it for much longer.”
The delegation also included Senator Mark Kelly. He says it’s gaining momentum. Senator Kerry also believes real progress in immigration reform is possible now.
