YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Negotiations to relocate the Yuma County Fairgrounds continue, but changes are being made on-site as a temporary solution.
More than 200 events have been held at the expo site here, and because the venue is within a direct flight path of Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma and the airport, a temporary solution was recently implemented to keep everyone safe. I found a solution.
“We support the military and we support the mission,” said Jonathan Lines, Yuma County District 2 Board of Supervisors.
The Yuma County Fairgrounds has been adjacent to the airport and Yuma Airfield for about 70 years, but for just as long one of the issues has been how close planes fly.
The Yuma County Fair also occurs around the same time as the Marine Corps Weapons and Tactics Instructor Court, which increases aircraft activity.
In 2022, the state allocated $5 million to relocate some buildings to what the Yuma base considers a “safe zone.”
The fairgrounds general manager explains the need for the changes.
“Their business base has grown over the years. So have we, and this will allow us to grow a bit more. Hopefully, until we find a permanent solution to relocate the amusement park.” Yuma County Amusement Park General Manager Eric Wofford explained.
The change in carnival location is temporary, but Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines said he is working to find a more permanent solution.
“As you know, it is estimated that it will cost hundreds of millions to completely rewire the infrastructure to another location. We expect to see such discussions again in the future.” said Lines.
Wofford spoke about why the Fairgrounds holds a special place in his heart.
“Oh my god! The fair means so much to me for so many reasons. Personally, I grew up in amusement parks. I showed animals,” Wofford said. .
He also strives to spread joy.
“We try to create all of that and create a fun place for families to come and not have to worry about anything but having fun,” Wofford said.
This year's fair will be held from April 2nd (Friday) to April 7th (Sunday).
But until then, there are still some events you can attend, including next month's Yuma Silver Spa Rodeo.
