Yuma County sheriff steps up patrols at Martinez Lake for Memorial Day weekend

Yuma, Arizona (azfamily) – Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest times in Lake Martinez, a popular location along the lower Colorado River. Hundreds of residents and visitors flock to the area for fun as well. The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is increasing its patrols to ensure water safety.

Deputy Gyro Cardenas is on the sheriff’s boat and safety enforcement team. This weekend they will look for violations and, most importantly, educate the public about boat safety. He says that all the stops they make are an opportunity to notify the sailors and ensure that they follow the rules of the boat. They are also looking for people to drive under the influence.

Cardenas said the presence of strong law enforcement agencies will help to increase safety and prevent incidents like the fire that occurred in the lake over last year’s anniversary weekend.

“What happened last year, we’re going to try and all that stuff happens then we try to mitigate it,” Cardenas said.

Sheriff Leon Wilmott explained that last year’s guns lit last year’s fire. He emphasized this year that fire safety is a top priority.

“That’s our biggest concern right now. The fire is safe here. It’s dry,” Wilmott said.

Wilmot recommends using a whistle or horn or calling emergency services in case of an emergency. “Call us, BLM, or wildlife, and we will respond with the right equipment,” he ex[;aom[;aom[;aom。[;aom

The sheriff’s office says every boat on the water needs to have ample life jackets, fire extinguishers, throwable flotation devices, work lights and proper registration.
