Yuma County Sheriff’s boat patrol keeps river goers safe on Memorial Day

YUMA, AZ (KYMA, KECY) – During Memorial Day weekend, many people put a trip to the local lakes and rivers on their to-do list.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office has advised boaters to use caution in local waters.
“Our primary role as the sheriff’s office is not just to be there, but to ensure safety and make sure everyone is having fun, and no one was injured this year. We were very lucky not to,” said Deputy Sheriff Alex Hernandez.

The YCSO has several agents patrolling the river to ensure the safety of boaters on this crowded boating holiday.
“There were a lot of boats here. Hundreds, hundreds of boats means thousands of people. We had very few accidents and we were there, but luckily no one was hurt,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez patrols Lake Martinez, Fisher’s Landing, and the Colorado River.

According to YCSO, there were a lot of people on weekends, but the holidays themselves were a little smaller.
“Most of the locals gather here today on Memorial Day because they want to avoid other people’s traffic,” Hernandez said.

Jarrod Liasser, a Yuma local, has been coming to the river for 40 years.
“Great time, great weather, no doubt about it. Lots of boating here. It’s a little lighter today on Monday and it’s a lot of fun. Nothing but a great experience so far.” said.

He advises other boaters to be careful.
“Hundreds, maybe thousands, of boats will be here in good weather, but you just have to keep your head on the spindle,” said Liasser.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office offers some tips for staying safe while having fun on the water.

Don’t drink and drive, wear a life jacket and educate your boat passengers.
“If it’s an emergency, call 9-1-1. It’s a priority, so keep trying,” Hernandez said.
