YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Today’s Home Grown Report kicked off the 71st Annual Yuma County Fair on Tuesday with local 4-H kids showing the animals in the arena!
The Yuma County Fair isn’t just about delicious food and thrilling rides, it’s also a time for local 4-H members to shine and showcase the projects they’ve been working on all year long.
Wyatt Bacon started exhibiting animals when he was 10 years old.
“So this is a Prancer named after a reindeer,” said Wyatt.
This year he raised production feeder calves.
“I weighed him today and he weighed about 429 pounds,” he said.
Wyatt says growing his calves has taught him some important responsibilities.
“I got him two days old, bought a bag of milk and a bag of grain from there, and had to go out there every morning and night to make milk,” Wyatt said.
He not only raised the calves, but also trained them.
“We hope to win big. I have a face,” he said.
Katie Lugo is also a 4-H Ambassador.
“I’ve been on the show for nine years, since I was nine years old, and I’m really happy he’s my pig this year,” Katie said.
She says all her hard work has paid off in the arena.
“I came in third in my class and he did really well. Showmanship is all about the exhibitor, but the market is all about this person,” Katie said.
Katie says she’s sad to sell her pig, but says it’s part of the project.
“Considering that I could raise him to be able to feed someone who might not have food that year, perhaps put food on someone else’s table, I think It makes me feel happy.
Saturday is the auction, so if you’re interested in purchasing a home-made animal from a home-made child, please visit the Junior Livestock Commission’s office for more information.
