Pinal County to suspend issuance of open burn permits

Pinal County Air Quality began issuing three-day burn-only permits beginning April 2. All permits will expire by his May 1st and Pinal County will stop issuing all open burning permits on his April 28th.

The open burning permit will allow for the disposal of plant material by open burning during limited daylight hours, according to the release.

Additionally, state law prohibits open burning in Area A from May 1 through September 30. The Pinal County portion of Area A includes Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Gold Canyon, Sun Tan Valley, and parts of Florence.

Annual cycles of rising temperatures will quickly dry out seasonal vegetation, leading to a severe wildfire risk in the county’s desert and highland areas, the release said.

The suspension of burn permits will last until the summer monsoon arrives, mitigating a double risk to public safety and public health.
