A man wanted in Peoria on multiple sex crimes charges against children was extradited from Mexico on Friday night.

Gilberto Buitimea Bacasegua, 52, was charged in March 2016 with two counts of sexual acts with minors, two counts of sexual abuse, and one count of kidnapping, according to the U.S. Security Service.

In securing the arrest and extradition of Mr. Bacasegua, the Peoria Police Department and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office received assistance from the Federal Marshals Service, which worked with Mexican law enforcement, the federal agency said. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the handover went without incident.

In a statement, Deputy U.S. Marshal Van Bayless praised the “outstanding investigative and cooperative efforts” of police departments, county attorneys’ offices and federal agencies in finding and returning Ms. Bacasegua to Arizona.

“Incidents like this demonstrate how important it is for government agencies to work diligently to ensure the safety and security of our communities,” Bayless said in a statement.

The U.S. Security Service did not say where in Mexico Mr. Bacasegua lived or how long he had been in the country. A spokeswoman for the agency could not be reached for comment.
