In an interview with Fox News Tonight on Tuesday, Chris Christie explained why he stopped supporting former President Donald Trump and attacked what he saw as a policy failure.
Christie sat down with guest host Piers Morgan to discuss the current state of the 2024 presidential election and clarify the differences between herself and the former president. Christie has denounced Trump’s management of the White House during his only term as president. “Who are some of Donald Trump’s senior staff and senior cabinet members who will work under him again?” Christie asked. “His secretary of state, his defense secretary, his attorney general, his chief of staff, none of his White House advisers. What do you understand from
“You wanted to work for him,” Morgan replied.
Christie denied the allegations, saying he had turned down multiple offers to work for the Trump administration.
“I’ve had offers for the Secretary of Labor, the Secretary of Homeland Security and the White House Chief of Staff, but I turned them down,” Christie said.
The former Republican governor of New Jersey also denied blaming Trump for January 6. Christie said she blamed Trump for denying the legitimacy of the 2020 election.
“That’s when I abandoned him,” Christie said.
Christie also said she supports Trump, helping prepare debates, chairing the opioid committee and chairing the presidential transition.
“I supported Donald Trump and did everything in my power to make him the best president possible, but he let me down and let me down,” Christie claimed.
Christie rammed through a rattling list of Trump’s alleged policy failures, including the repeal of Obamacare and the unfinished wall on the border with Mexico.
Morgan then asked Christie why, according to polls, his message didn’t seem to resonate with Republicans. Christie said he needed more time, but he stressed that he thinks he has the support in the primary.
“In five weeks, I went from nothing to third in New Hampshire, just four points behind Ron DeSantis in five weeks,” Christie said.
Christie said Republican voters deserved two things that Donald Trump seemed unable to provide: “truth” and “results.”
