Special Counsel Jack Smith has reached out to Republican Georgia Governor Brian Kemp regarding an investigation into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Kemp’s publicist Andrew Eisenhour told the Daily Caller News Foundation, “We can confirm that our office has been contacted by Jack Smith’s office, but we will not be commenting further at this time.” This is the first time Kemp’s office has had any contact with Smith as part of this investigation. according to to the Washington Post.
After the 2020 election, President Trump called Kemp and tried to convince him to convene a special session of the state legislature to overturn President Joe Biden’s narrow victory in Georgia. according to To NBC News. At a rally in Georgia in 2021, President Trump declared that he was “going to campaign against the governor here in a year and a half.” “I guarantee it.”
playing cards announced Smith announced on Tuesday that he had sent him a “targeted letter” regarding an investigation into the then-president’s actions after the 2020 election. The letter said Mr Trump could be subject to criminal charges and could hint at future charges.
