As President Donald Trump's legal proceedings play out, the Justice Department has been seeking for months to enforce a gag order against the Republican front-runner that would effectively bar him from discussing the 2022 FBI raid on his Mar-a-Lago, Florida estate.
Opponents of the gag order believe it is unconstitutional, unclear and merely an attempt by the Biden administration to silence Trump in an election year.
Today, 25 state attorneys general, including Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, issued a joint letter to a Florida district court urging it to deny the gag order request.
“President Biden's attempt to use the courts to block his political opponents from criticizing the Department of Justice is a stunning attack on First Amendment freedoms,” Marshall said. “The American people have a right to hear from the leading Republican presidential nominee about the issues facing our country, including the Biden Administration's potential misuse of law enforcement to target political opponents. The gag order requested by Biden is a desperate and shocking attempt to silence Trump and distort the results of the election.”
“The Biden Department of Justice is conducting an unprecedented attack on President Trump's First Amendment rights and freedoms, and we will continue to fight back against this extreme political prosecution.”
Iowa, Florida and West Virginia co-led the letter, joined by Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.
