The Alabama Senate Judiciary Committee advanced a bill on Wednesday that would temporarily fix a problematic timeline between the end of the Democratic National Convention and the Alabama Secretary of State's certification of the party's nominees for the November 2024 U.S. presidential election.
State Rep. Anthony Daniels (D-Huntsville) and State Sen. Merika Coleman Companion Building This comes after Secretary of State Wes Allen warned state and national Democratic Party officials of a major surprise to the Democratic electoral process in 2024. Alabama's certification deadline is August 15, 2024. The Democratic National Convention is scheduled to begin on August 19, 2024.
“SB 324 came about as a result of us hearing from the Secretary of State that President Joe Biden would not have a chance to appear on the ballot in the November election,” Sen. Coleman (D-Birmingham) told the committee. “And, of course, we began to rally together as a state that we wanted to make sure that every Alabamian had the opportunity to vote for the candidate of their choice.”

“And what [SB324] “The only thing this bill does is allow certificates of nomination from the parties to be filed with the Secretary of State's office 74 days before that date instead of 82 days before,” she told the committee.
The bill also received support from Republicans on the committee, who reported favorably. State Sen. Sam Givhan (R-Huntsville) said, “Alabamians have a deep sense of fairness when it comes to our politics and our elections.”
“I think people need to understand that this law has been in place since 1970. Communications have only improved slightly since 1975. I'd like to think that if the positions were reversed, this issue would be resolved,” Givhan said.
Thursday marks the 23rd day of the 2024 state Legislature session as lawmakers hold committee meetings without a full day this week.
