How did Maricopa County test its election equipment?

More than 2,500 ballots were counted, and the results were deemed a 100% match by both Republican and Democratic observers.

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — With Election Day just four weeks away, the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office on Tuesday tested Maricopa County’s vote tabulators.

It’s an hours-long process to ensure that the money that Maricopa County’s estimated 2.1 million voters will write on their ballots in the general election is counted accurately by county tabulators.

“There’s been a lot of attention to elections lately, and Maricopa County has really been the epicenter of a lot of exposure. We want people to know we’re having safe and fair elections. ” said Maricopa County Deputy Director of Elections Jennifer Liewer. Said.

The blind test was conducted on more than 2,500 ballots brought in by the Secretary of State’s office.

For the first time since 2006, Maricopa County voters will cast their votes on a two-page ballot.

“That means there are nearly 4.2 million pieces of paper that need to be counted with this equipment,” Maricopa County Elections Director Scott Jarrett said at a news conference. county live stream Logic and accuracy testing.

The test begins with supervisors from both the Maricopa County Republican Party and the Maricopa County Democratic Party first making sure everything is “zeroed,” meaning no votes are being counted.

The selected on-site tabulators and central tabulators then begin counting the ballots. Accessible voting devices are also part of the selected equipment test group.

“Then we also check what’s called adjudication. If for some reason the ballot can’t be read, a live human being looks at it and tries to determine the voter’s intent,” Liewer said.

Ultimately, both Republican and Democratic observers agree that these races are consistent with what the Secretary of State’s office results show, which means that the county tabulations are accurate and that Maricopa County is the agreed that it meant that it passed the test of logic and accuracy.

But the process began a few weeks ago, testing all of its equipment, including stress testing new printers in the wake of the 2022 election struggle.

“Since 2022, we have replaced all of our ballot-on-demand printers, so the printers that are in our vote centers are actually larger, more robust printers that make sure that the ballots are printed accurately. We can now guarantee that it will print. We are stress testing it and hope everything goes smoothly,” said Leewer.

Early voting begins tomorrow. More information, including voting locations and dates, can be found on the county’s website.
