Trump got off to a strong start with a landslide win in Florida and better than expected in Virginia, and never looked back.
North Carolina and Georgia were the first battleground states to call, and by 11 p.m., Harris’ Sun Belt route to victory had disappeared.
Harris campaign chairwoman Jen O’Malley Dillon circulated a memo to campaign staff around 11 p.m. asking them to “get some sleep” and telling them she would lead the campaign to victory on Wednesday. However, Harris’ return continued to be delayed. Around 1 a.m., campaign co-chairman Cedric Richmond took to the stage at a watch party at Howard University and announced that the vice president would not be speaking to supporters tonight.
