Cochise County Adapts to Electric Vehicle Demand
BISBEE, Ariz. – As electric vehicles (EVs) become more popular, Cochise County officials knew they had to keep up with the times. So, they applied for a grant to acquire seven dual-port electric vehicle charging stations to set up across the county.
“This effort helps connect various parts of Arizona and enhances transportation options in Cochise County,” stated Christine McLachlan, the Director of Development Services.
The county secured $500,000 from a federal grant aimed at supporting charging and fuel infrastructure for 2024. “It enables counties like ours to afford these installations and offers more accessible fueling options for local residents,” she added.
These charging stations are positioned in Bisbee, Sierra Vista, and Wilcox, chosen to be conveniently accessible for those working in nearby businesses. “We aimed for equitable access throughout the county, focusing on the most populated areas,” McLachlan explained. “These strategically selected spots, such as those near hospitals, could help attract professionals who expect to find charging facilities nearby.”
McLachlan sees this initiative as a chance to boost tourism, especially as electric vehicle ownership rises. “More Arizonans are opting for electric cars, and they’re on the lookout for convenient places to recharge while they shop or engage in other activities,” she mentioned.
The county benefits financially every time someone uses a charger. “Typically, charging costs about 12 cents per kilowatt-hour, and we charge a bit more than that, which contributes to the county’s revenue,” McLachlan noted.
Looking ahead, she hopes to expand the charging infrastructure in the county, believing it’s essential for the overall network. “I think this is just a part of our entire infrastructure. More options will make electric vehicles a viable choice for people in southern Arizona,” McLachlan concluded.
