Trump Signs Major Domestic Law
On Friday, President Trump enacted a significant piece of legislation that reinforces his 2017 tax cuts along with other key domestic priorities. The House had passed the bill the previous day, with a close vote of 218 to 214.
During the signing ceremony in the Rose Garden, Trump spoke with enthusiasm about shaping the economy as the 250th anniversary of America approaches. “We’re building an economy that uplifts the middle class and secures our borders,” he stated, emphasizing the uniqueness of the current economic landscape.
The president had aimed to finalize the law by July 4th, although there were moments when that timeline seemed tight. Prior to the bill’s finalization, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered an exhaustive speech lasting over eight hours, setting a record for the longest address in that chamber’s history.
One of the law’s main features is the permanent extension of the 2017 tax cuts. It also aims to eliminate taxes on tips and overtime pay, while increasing the child tax credit to $2,200. Additionally, it cuts Medicaid spending by approximately $1 trillion over the next decade and allocates significant funds for border security and defense.
Only two Republicans from the House opposed the legislation. Trump expressed disappointment over their votes but didn’t disclose whether he planned to challenge one of them in the upcoming primaries.
After the bill’s passage, the president attended the Iowa State Fair, where the crowd warmly welcomed him, chanting patriotic phrases as he began his address to kick off the 250th year of the nation.
Before leaving, Trump remarked on the event’s significance, highlighting the pride he feels for the country, which he believes has reached new heights. The atmosphere seemed electric, especially as attendees like Lee Greenwood performed patriotic songs during the celebration.
