Trump Meets with West African Leaders to Discuss Investment
During a meeting at the White House on Wednesday, President Donald Trump called on leaders from West Africa to enhance their tracking efforts. The discussion primarily revolved around economic investments aimed at increasing access to vital minerals and countering China’s growing influence in the region. Trump encouraged the leaders to expedite their remarks and get to the point.
“I’m very grateful for it. Perhaps we could follow a schedule that allows us to go a bit faster,” Trump remarked. He suggested that it would be helpful if leaders introduced themselves and their countries clearly.
Additionally, Trump encouraged a shift from traditional aid to trade as these nations face significant cuts in US assistance. He highlighted the “great economic potential” present in Africa and urged a focus on partnerships that are mutually beneficial.
Leaders from Liberia, Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, and Guinea-Bissau showcased their countries’ natural resources and expressed gratitude for Trump’s past efforts in resolving conflicts, such as those in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Trump referred to these nations as “vibrant places,” emphasizing their rich mineral, oil, and human resources.
This conference is part of a broader shift in US foreign policy, as the Trump administration has recently dismantled the US International Development Agency. Furthermore, Trump is focused on reaching a lasting peace deal regarding the Hamas-Israel conflict, which involves addressing hostages and disarmament issues.
