Alabama’s Electric Cooperatives support Derek Chen for State Auditor and Chris Beeker for PSC.

The Political Action Committee of the Electric Cooperative of Alabama has announced its support for state auditor Derek Chen and Chris Beaker, who is associated with the Alabama Public Service Commission.

The PAC’s board, made up of leaders from electrical cooperatives across the state, is focused on promoting rural communities and pro-energy initiatives.

“Derek Chen is an impressive young leader who truly cares about the future of Alabama,” shared local CEO Carl Rayborn. “I have confidence in his abilities and dedication to serve as state auditor.”

A resident of Vestavia Hills, Chen earned his undergraduate degree from Hope College in Michigan, later acquiring a law degree from the Cumberland School of Law and an MBA from the University of Alabama. He previously practiced law in Jefferson County before deciding to run for the position of state auditor.

His perspective on responsible citizenship stems from his family’s journey; he was born in the United States to immigrants from Taiwan who escaped communist China.

“This region is crucial for reinforcing Alabama’s communities and ensuring families and businesses have access to reliable, affordable energy,” Chen remarked. “I value their support and look forward to collaborating with them for Alabama’s energy future.”

“A sound energy policy is vital for the future of Alabama as it ties into employment, economic development, and the strength of our communities,” noted Sean Strickler, local vice president of foreign affairs. “Chris Beaker is well-versed in both the policies and the individuals they affect, and we’re proud to support him at the PSC.”

Beaker, originally from rural Alabama and now living in Tuscaloosa, served as Alabama’s USDA Regional Development Director during President Trump’s administration, facilitating funding for essential services like water, broadband, and housing in rural areas. He also has more than a decade of experience in banking and finance.

Beaker, who was appointed to the committee by Governor Kay Ivey in 2024, expressed gratitude for the backing.

This backing represents a unified effort from Alabama Electric Cooperatives, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing rural communities and fostering progress.

The primary election is set for Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
