Americans Trust Secret Service Less Than IRS After Trump Shooting, Poll Shows

According to a Gallup poll released Monday, the U.S. Secret Service now has less confidence in its job performance than the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

According to vote In the survey, conducted Sept. 3-15, just 32% of respondents said the U.S. Secret Service was doing a “very good/good” job, while 36% said it was poor. The IRS was rated “very good” or “good” by 34%. Despite two assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump this year, most recently on a golf course in Palm Beach, Florida, the numbers were the Secret Service's lowest approval rating since 2014.

“Since 2014, an average of 53 percent of Americans have given the Secret Service a favorable rating,” Gallup said, “but this isn't the first year the agency hasn't received an excellent or good rating from the majority. In 2014, the agency received a 43 percent positive rating after several security lapses, including an intruder jumping the fence and breaking into the White House.” (RELATED: Mike Johnson unveils new spending bill that includes Secret Service budget boost)

The poll found that trust in the Secret Service is higher among Democrats on average, with 47% of Democrats saying the service does a good or great job, compared with just 20% of Republicans. But both ratings have declined across party lines, with Democrats' approval rating falling 18 points since 2023 and Republicans' approval rating falling 26 points over the same period.

The IRS's approval rating fell from 50% in 2019 to 37% in 2021. According to A 2021 Gallup Poll found that Republicans will significantly outnumber Democrats in 2024, with just 19% of Republicans saying the IRS is doing an excellent or good job compared to 50% of Democrats.

On average, Democrats rate all government agencies more favorably than Republicans, according to the poll. The agency with the highest overall favorability was the U.S. Postal Service, which 59% of respondents rated as “very good” or “good.”

According to the poll, the Secret Service has enjoyed high approval ratings since 2014, reaching a high of 69% receiving a “very good” or “good” rating in 2019. The recent drop in approval ratings is similar to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) 24-point drop from 2019 to 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than a quarter of Democrats said the United States would be better off if President Trump had been shot and killed in the recent assassination attempt in Palm Beach, according to a September 18 poll. Just under half of respondents blamed the assassination attempt on Trump for anti-Trump rhetoric.

The poll surveyed 1,007 adults via mobile phone or landline, with a 4 percentage point margin of error.
