Avian Influenza Detected in Maricopa County Backyard Flock: Quarantine and Safety Measures in Place | Prescott Valley Times local news







A backyard flock of poultry in Maricopa County has tested positive for avian influenza. When poultry started showing clinical symptoms consistent with avian influenza, samples taken from the location were submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) for testing, with results confirmed on November 21, 2024. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk to the general public is considered low, and those at greatest risk of exposure are those directly involved in the day-to-day care and care of the birds. “ADHS is working with AZDA and local health departments on the avian influenza response and will continue to work with local health departments to monitor influenza activity in Arizona. Risk to the general public remains low. However, workers and individuals who may be at risk should follow public health guidance regarding exposure to avian influenza,” said Nicole Witt, ADHS Deputy Director of Preparedness.
