Chicago Mayor Criticizes Trump, Claims Threats to Democracy
Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson recently expressed concerns on MSNBC about President Donald Trump posing a significant threat to democracy.
The Trump administration is reportedly seeking military assistance for federal immigration initiatives around Chicago. ICE is preparing for future enforcement actions in various cities. During his appearance on “A Briefing with Jen Psaki,” Johnson stated that Trump has “trampled” democratic principles and fostered partisanship within what was once a neutral system.
“The President has made it clear he doesn’t want another election. We need to take his threats seriously. It’s evident he doesn’t uphold our Constitution,” Johnson asserted.
“You either support the Constitution or you don’t. This President consistently undermines the very essence of our democracy. We’ll be vocal against federal forces occupying our cities,” he continued.
Johnson accused Trump of exacerbating conflicts and compromising community strength. He claimed cities like Chicago will resist such federal actions. “He keeps showing us he’s not focused on uniting our community. Our democracy needs everyone’s participation, and what this President is doing is sowing division,” he added, emphasizing the need to protect both democracy and the people.
In August, Trump deployed federal agents and National Guard units in Washington, D.C., which led to the arrest of many, including foreigners charged with serious crimes. The administration plans to expand these efforts to Chicago and potentially New York City later on.
As violent crime rates rise in Chicago, residents are increasingly calling for action. A report from the Illinois Institute of Policy Studies indicated that in 2024, Chicago experienced 28,443 violent crimes, marking a peak not seen in two decades. While there was a slight drop in overall violent crime since 2023, the past decade has shown an upward trajectory.
Since his inauguration in April 2023, Johnson has faced growing criticism regarding crime and the city’s approach to the immigration shelter crisis, which has reportedly cost taxpayers over $400 million in just two years. Tensions flared at a recent city council meeting, where Johnson was compelled to ask police to remove protesters upset about budget reallocations favoring immigrant services.
